"Character 1: Paul the apostle — Saul of Tarsus, Hebrew of the tribe of Benjamin, Roman citizen of Tarsus in Cilicia, formerly a Pharisee of the Pharisees taught at the feet of Gamaliel (Acts 22:3), converted on the road to Damascus (Acts 9), tentmaker by trade (Acts 18:3). At Corinth in AD 51-52 he is in his late forties: short of stature, balding crown with curled iron-grey hair at the temples, full dark-grey-and-iron beard, weathered olive-tan skin, sun-creased forehead, intense piercing dark eyes, slightly bowed gait, a faint thin scar along his right brow (carried from past stonings and beatings). Default clothing (writing-desk scenes at Corinth): long ankle-length plain cream-linen tunic, deep-russet wool sash, undyed wool mantle draped over the left shoulder, leather sandals, a small leather scroll-pouch at his belt, reed-pen in his right hand, ink-horn of dark bronze. Acts 17 flashback (founding visit to Thessalonica): dust-of-the-road on his sandals and the lower hem of his tunic, dust on his mantle, his hand lifted in synagogue-teaching gesture. Acts 17 flashback (the mob): cream tunic catching torch-light, Paul kept off-frame in the deep background as the mob assails Jason's house. Default at the writing-desk: cream tunic still pristine, faint warm-amber lamp-glow on his face, the open scroll of his letter to Thessalonica beneath his hand."
